A fever is the body's natural way of fighting infection. It can be worrying for parents, but in most cases the child's behaviour tells you more than the number on the thermometer.

Caring for your child at home

  • Give plenty of fluids — water, breast milk, soups or ORS.
  • Dress your child in light clothes.
  • Let them rest, but keep checking on them.
  • Give paracetamol only in the dose recommended for their weight.

See a doctor if your child

  • Is younger than 3 months and has any fever.
  • Has fever for more than 3 days.
  • Is unusually sleepy, floppy or difficult to wake.
  • Has a rash that does not fade when pressed.
  • Is breathing fast, not drinking, or has very few wet nappies.
