High blood pressure (hypertension) often has no symptoms, which is why it is called a silent condition. Left untreated, it raises the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney problems. The good news: with regular care, most people keep it well controlled.
Check your blood pressure the right way
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring.
- Keep your arm supported at heart level.
- Measure at the same time each day and write the numbers down.
- Bring your notebook to every doctor visit.
Everyday habits that help
- Use less salt — watch out for pickles (achar), instant noodles and packaged snacks.
- Walk briskly for 30 minutes on most days.
- Eat more vegetables, fruits and pulses (dal).
- Limit alcohol and stop smoking.
- Sleep 7–8 hours and find time to relax.
When to seek help urgently
