My son has had a dry cough at night for a week. He plays normally during the day and eats well. No fever.

A night-time cough after a cold is very common — mucus drips down the throat when children lie down. Keep him well hydrated, use saline nose drops and raise his head slightly. Avoid cough syrups in young children unless prescribed. See a doctor if the cough lasts more than 2–3 weeks, he wheezes or breathes fast, or develops fever.

Adding to the above: if there is a family history of asthma or allergies, or the cough comes back with every cold, mention this to your doctor. Also keep him away from smoke, including from cooking fires and cigarettes.
